Body, Mind and Art

It is amazing how our bodies and minds can tell two different stories. Why is this? The brain develops survival stratergies like dissociation/ disconnection to separate us from the body so we do not feel the distressing sensations and feelings when something bad is being experienced.

However, when these stratergies become the normal way of coping we loose connection with our true selves, our resilience, which negatively effects how we interact and view the world around us.

Tamapla

Tamalpa is the use of drawing, writing, and the body to help articulate any messages from the body and the unconscious mind. Bringing messages to the conscious mind so they can be felt, processed and integrated.

Using art modalities can be triggering for some, I only use art if it is appropriate or if it is something you are happy to participate in.

Somatic Experiencing

Trauma may result from a variety reasons such as accidents, sexual or physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, attachment trauma, natural disasters, loss or the stress of ongoing fear and conflict, which all can impair the ability to function with ease and resilience. Bad experiences dysregulate our nervous systems, SE helps to bring the system back into regulation and homeostasis.

The goal of SE is to uncover the bodily sensations linked to past events. To heal we need to reconnect to our bodies and feel the sensations and emotions from the experiences that caused the wounding. I work according to the pace of each client, nothing is rushed, my aim is to keep you within your capacity, to allow healing to happen. I see it as a collaborative process, together we find what works best for your system.

Working with both the body and the mind is needed in order to process and integrate bad experiences stuck in the body. Shifts that happen in the body are most likely to be followed by shifts in how we think, which will most likely shift unhealthy patterns, and symptoms ie.depression, dissociation, anxiety, PTSD, panic attacks, relational problems, self-esteem, self worth, self harm, etc..
